I have used Reamps for many years and have been very happy with them. Would it alone do the trick as far as you're concerned? What are your thoughts? Is there a sonic defference or are the main differences in the features? I have the JDI. You have and use both units he was interested in. I just happen to have the x-amp as it was quickly available at the time I was purchasing. It sounds like you're the guy who the original poster was looking for. Active boxes tend to have more ‘reach’ or better high frequency transfer of upper harmonic detailĪlso, the Package deal is a J48(active DI, which cannot be used as a re-amp device) and the X-AMP. The difference however is akin to comparing a passive direct box to an active direct box or like comparing a dynamic mic to a condenser. ![]() The Radial JDI, when driven ‘backwards’, will also reverse the impedance from low-Z to hi-Z and allow a padded down line level to drive the amp at a 10k-ohm level. Q: I heard that the Radial JDI can be used backwards as a re-amping device?Ī: Yes this is true. The ‘input’ of the JDI to the input of the guitar amplifier and you are set to go! Keep your level down to ensure the signal will not overload the JDI’s transformer. Simply connect the output from the recorder to a mixer and the mixer’s output to the JDI’s XLR output using a female-tofemale The Radial JDI can be used ‘backwards’ to convert a low-impedance mic level signal back to a high-impedance guitar signal. Les Paul in the 1950’s and was widely used on recordings by the Beatles in the 60’s, and by Steely Dan in the 1970’s. This effect is known as reamping or re-amplifying and was started by Track back through a guitar amplifier or effect pedal. Today, a popular studio effect is to record a signal such as guitar, voice or keyboard on a track and then run the pre-recorded Use the Radial JDI to re-amplify your signal! They even sell a DI and the X-Amp as a kit. If their DI already can re-amp then why the seperate box (X-Amp)? There is no mention of this in the sales literature, only in the user guide. Ground lift, phase reverse and 80Hz recessed filter switches are also standard.Below is quoted from the Radial JDI manual. It can be powered from 48V phantom power or batteries, has rugged 14-gauge steel construction and extended, distortion-free headroom via a 10V internal rail voltage capacity. It's been designed for professional stage and recording studio use. This opens the door to explore new musical sounds and spur on the creative process since the unit will drive a guitar amplifier as if the player was still plugged into it. The X-Amp is an active reamping device that allows an engineer or producer to take a pre-recorded guitar track that would be typically at line level, and output a guitar level signal that can then be sent back to an amplifier/speaker or an effects box. An example of reamping is recording an electric guitar with no amp or effects direct into a recorder (using the J48 direct box), and sending the guitar's signal out of the recorder at line-level into the X-Amp, and then sending the guitar's signal to two separate amplifiers. ![]() The idea behind the kit is to supply you with everything you need to carry out the reamping recording technique. The Reamping Kit from Radial Engineering is a kit that consists of the X-Amp reamplifier, a J48 active direct box, an AC power adapter, and a carrying case.
